SJ23 Track & Field: Lions Find Success at Regional Championships

The Lions had a successful day at the regional track meet on Wednesday, April 23, earning multiple state qualification spots, two Regional Champion titles, and setting four new school records.
Having both won their respective events at the district meet, Lions Max Aguilera (So.) and Chris Pietrak (Sr.) continued their success as regional champions, securing state qualification.

Max Aguilera - Sophomore - Pole Vault - Regional Champion
With a jump of 11 feet 9 inches, Max soared into first place. This tremendous performance saw him clear 3 inches higher than his closest competitor. Looking ahead to the State meet next week, Max aims to reach even greater heights.

Chris Pietrak - Senior - 3200m - Regional Champion
Beginning the race with patience, Chris positioned himself in 2nd place as the final lap began. With a strategic 400-meter sprint, he seized the lead and held off a close challenge, ultimately winning by .36 seconds.

Bentley Johnson, Aaliyah Phillips-Robinson, Colette Maduagwu, and Stephanie Rennie - 4x100m Relay - School Record
Continuing their remarkable streak, this group has broken their own school record for the third meet in a row. They ran an impressive 50.21 this week, improving upon their previous record of 50.41. Congratulations, Lions!

Bentley Johnson, Colette Maduagwu, Madigan Sero, and Madeline Hartfiel - 4x400m Relay - School Record
Since 2017, the 4x400m record has been a formidable mark, resisting numerous attempts by talented Lions teams. But in 2025, after eight years, it has been broken. Displaying incredible grit and determination, the girls ran an outstanding 4:13.35, shattering the old record by nearly four seconds. Congratulations, Lions!

Matthew Muraski - Sophomore - 800m - School Record
Maintaining his impressive racing in the 800m, Muraski shaved nearly half a second off his own school record, finishing in 1:58.29. The race concluded in a true nail-biter, with him narrowly missing first place by a mere .07 seconds. We look forward to Matthew competing at State.

Nairod Fonseca - Senior - Triple Jump - School Record
A year ago at the regional meet, Nairod's incredible 43 feet 0.5 inch jump set the school record. Now, he's done it again! With a fantastic leap of 43 feet 4.75 inches, Nairod is heading back to State and has established a new school record. Congratulations, Nairod!
