Art Department Restores Sacred Heart of Jesus

Recently the Art Department of St. John XXII College Preparatory School restored a Sacred Heart of Jesus statue which will soon take a permanent place on campus.  Principal Joe Noonan has quite a history with the statue and brought it to Art Teacher, Carol Szymanski, earlier this year, hoping it could be repaired.  However, with school’s decision to go fully remote for several days early in the second semester, followed closely by a winter freeze, the project was put on hold.  During the Easter season, the time was right for Mrs. Szymanski, along with three upper-level art students, to begin the work that would span several weeks. Their enthusiasm for the project went well beyond the needed repairs, and a beautiful restoration was completed just before classes dismissed for the summer.

Students may begin working on their Works of Mercy requirement for the next school year after June 1, 2021.
The Works of Mercy Program is an integral component our curriculum at St. John XXIII College Preparatory. The  program inspires in our students a heart of service that grounds them in virtue and leads to a lifetime of sacrifice and generosity. Based on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy as given to us by Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 25:34-40), our students are inspired to see the face of Christ as they serve the needs of those less fortunate.
Summer is a great time for our Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors to be working on their Works of Mercy requirement.  Please review the updated information on our website for specific details and forms. All students must be working from the pre-approved list of agencies for school year 2021-22.

      March 5, 2021
Following Governor Abbott’s announcement on Wednesday, the TEA issued guidance yesterday regarding the opening of schools, mask requirements, and COVID-19 protocols. Essentially, the TEA has placed these decisions into the hands of local boards of education. As of this morning, neither the Catholic Schools Office, nor the TCCB-ED have issued any revised guidelines. Thus, SJ23, along with all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, have been directed to continue with protocols currently in place.
Be assured that you will be kept informed as this situation evolves.

    • Inclement Weather Notification

We are monitoring the weather conditions forecasted for this coming Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday for our area. Based on the current models we do not anticipate any changes to class, schedules or activities, but this is a good time for a reminder to monitor local media to be aware of weather conditions.

As a further reminder, should inclement weather require changes to our class schedules or activities, we will notify all of our families, faculty, and staff members via IRIS, our emergency notification system.  Additionally, such notifications will be posted to our website and social media platforms.  Please take a few moments today to verify that your contact information in the Blackbaud system is correct.
Should inclement weather not allow us to come to campus any day next week, classes will continue with remote instruction per the established schedule.  Monday is a Crimson day of class, regardless if we are on campus or remote.
A friendly reminder tomorrow Friday, February 12 is a 8 period remote day.

Important Message from the Principal, January 26

      January 26, 2021
      Saints Timothy and Titus
      Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends,
As you know, the number of positive test results and the subsequent number of students entering the required quarantine period presents significant challenges to our stated goal of providing in-person instruction to our students.
The most prudent course of action is to begin a period of fully-remote instruction. We will begin fully-remote instruction Wednesday, January 27, 2021 through Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Students will return on-campus Wednesday, February 10, 2021. All athletics and co-curricular activities will also be postponed until we return. Please watch your email for specific information from your coaches.
To clarify, please see the academic calendar below:

As I indicated in my previous messages regarding our health and safety protocols, it takes our entire community working together to help keep our students healthy and in class.  With this in mind, please continue to practice social distancing guidelines to minimize your exposure to the virus.
      • Any student who is tested for COVID-19 must stay at home while awaiting the results.  Please notify if you are dealing with such a situation.
      • If a student has a close contact exposure outside of school email Nurse Burke, or
      • If anyone in the household tests COVID positive, please notify Nurse Burke immediately.
      • Notifications of a close contact exposure at school requiring quarantine will come via phone from Nurse Burke.
      • All COVID-19 protocols can be viewed here.
We fully expect that if we follow all of our protocols we will return on-campus Wednesday, February 10 and restart all of the 2nd semester activities.
      Sincerely in Christ,
      Joseph Noonan

I am thrilled to kick off 2021 with good news: Jiahe "Jason" Zhao  '21 has recently won the Distinguished Honorable Mention Award in the Art category in the 2020 Ocean Awareness Contest, a global arts competition sponsored by Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs that engages youth in creatively raising awareness of environmental issues impacting our blue planet. I hope that you will share this opportunity with your teachers and students—the Contest’s online platform is highly compatible with remote learning and provides educators with an enrichment program that helps them teach about environmental issues and creative communication.
