On a chilly night in Tomball, the Lady Lions took on the Lady Crusaders of Concordia Lutheran. Coming off an impressive 2016-2017 season finishing as district runner-ups with a 15-1 record, Concordia looked to continue last years work. The Saders fielded several NCAA Div. 1 prospects, but Lady Lions remained focused to instruction and showed how relentless they can be. Concordia began offensive attacks from the moment the whistle blew. The back line of Kathryn Juntti (Jr.), Claire Rady (Jr.), May Lien (Sr.), and Natalie Lane (Jr.) continued to display their resilience and uncompromising attitudes. In attack, Giulia Zaffaroni's (Sr.) hasty pace kept the Sader's defense honest.
The score remained 0 - 0 through half time and into the second half. The Lady Crusaders adjusted their play and continued towards goal only to find the posts and the hands of Caitlyn Mills (Jr). Despite their efforts, the Lady Lions answered a few of their own. A break away combination between Giulia Zaffaroni (Sr.) and Maya Nelson (So.) unbalanced the Sader defense to eventually find the feet of top goal scorer, Hanna Finzel (So.). Hanna's attempt met the Sader's goal keeper and adjusted the game's momentum. Junior Midfielder, Sabina Hillyer, exhibited her talents on the ball only to find herslef smothered by 3 Sader players at almost every moment. At minute 12, Hillyer was fouled outside the 18, allowing the Lady Lions a free kick at goal. Junior Captain, Jenny Bendokas stepped up to deliver the 35 yard shot which, sailed into the top left corner above the goalie's reach. The score remained 1-0 and the Lady Lions improve to 2-0 in district.
Match Analysis from Coach Zayne Ramirez: "As anticipated, Concordia produces a good soccer playing core. They have fantastic talent and use it well. They are guided by a great coaching staff who maintain their organization so they deserve the recognition and respect. Considering their style of play, I knew we needed to match that everywhere on the field. I felt we needed to turn the game into individual battles. Saders relied on their skill and off the ball movements. We were quick to recognize that and made every attempt to put them in uncomfortable situations. We had minimal chances but going forward required us to stay together as a unit from defense to forwards. I credit our forwards, Sophie Parent, Hanna, Giulia for working their tails off to be our first line of defense. They pressured their defense which gave us time behind them to re-organize and pick up their key players. Jenny's miracle goal?... It sank the hearts of the Lady Crusaders and lifted ours to wonderous glory. Even after... the longest 12 minutes in everyones lives, I might have broken the record for longest breath hold according to Guinness. We parked the bus, defensively, and held them until the end. And that is how underdog movies are made according to Mrs. Beth Rady.
