Welcome Preston Smith

The SJ23 Athletic Department is pleased to welcome Preston Smith as the Head Volleyball Coach.

We are excited about the direction and vision that he and the athletic department share for our volleyball program.

Coach Smith has a lengthy history of coaching and playing in the Houston area. He has coached at the USA, collegiate, high school, and club levels. Smith was an assistant womens’ volleyball coach at Texas Wesleyan University and Western State College of Colorado. He was also the captain of the men’s’ volleyball team at Western State College of Colorado. Additionally, he helped create the collegiate program at the University of St. Thomas and was the Interim head coach at Houston Baptist University in 2012.

At the club level, Smith was one of the former owners of Texas Alliance Volleyball. He has qualified teams from Houston Juniors, Texas Tornados, Southwest Juniors, TCA, VIA, and Texas Alliance for the USAV National Championships. Smith currently is a club coach and training director at Katy United. At the high school level, he had a record breaking 40-2 season, and won two district championships during his tenue at St. Pius X High School. In 2018, he led Fort Bend Christian Academy to an undefeated district and regional championship, finishing a 17-0 run going into the state quarter finals. In Louisiana, he received District 4 Coach of the year awards for St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Hammond.

While at St. Thomas he won a District Championship and a trip to the state final four. In Beach Volleyball, Preston has been a strong advocate for the growth of the sport by building one of the first programs in the Houston area at Third Coast in 2012. He helped start the beach programs for Third Coast, 692 Beach, and Houston Juniors. As a player, Smith continues to compete at the open level in indoor and outdoor volleyball in the Houston area and region and competes annually at the US Open (USAV Adult Volleyball Championships). Smith currently teaches at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. Smith is an award-winning international recording artist and hosts a smooth jazz/funk radio show.
