Our Application Process

All students must apply using the Application Process for new SJ23 students.

To be considered, a candidate for Academic Support Services must have the following:

  • An SJ23 application
  • A current (within 3 years) full scale psychoeducational evaluation by a licensed professional.
  • A student interview with the Academic Support Services Committee


Academic Support Services applications will be evaluated by committee on an individual basis. In addition to the required documentation, other criteria evaluated includes:

  • Applicant’s ability to be successful in a college-preparatory setting
  • Academic Support Services ability to meet the particular needs of each applicant
  • Prior educational history; pattern and practice showing an ongoing need for accommodations
  • Priority acceptance is given to current members of the St. John XXIII community and/or alumni of the school

All students applying for Academic Support Services must have appropriate documentation.

  • A Psychoeducational evaluation completed by a licensed professional.
  • The diagnosis must be clearly stated and must be supported.
  • The evaluation must be current (within the last 3 years).
  • Educational & developmental history is evident.
  • The functional limitation is described.
  • Recommended accommodations are justified.
  • Evaluator’s credentials are established.
  • Students with Learning Differences or ADD/ADHD must have cognitive and academic achievement testing.
  • Students with Physical Disorders must have a recent medical evaluation.

The following are examples of commonly used assessments by a licensed professional to diagnose learning differences and the need for accommodations.


  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale or Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children
  • Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities
  • Stanford Binet Intelligence Scales
  • Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children
  • Differential Ability Scales
  • Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales


  • Woodcock –Johnson Tests of Achievement
  • Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests
  • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test
  • Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement
  • Test of Written Language

Academic Support Service fees are as follows:

2020-21 Academic Support Services:
  • Level 2 - $3250
  • Level 1 - $1100
