About Our Patron:
Born in 1225, to a noble family of the Kingdom of Naples, Thomas was known, even from his youth, to be a remarkably intelligent and inquisitive student. His parents wanted him to join the illustrious Benedictine Order of monks; however, Thomas felt called
to join the new Dominican Order. This meant living a life of the strictest poverty, which his family believed was unbecoming the stature of the family. They, thus, kidnapped Thomas and locked him away
in a tower, ever enticing him to change his mind. Thomas never wavered, and eventually his family relented, allowing him to rejoin the Dominicans and continue his studies.
Thomas studied under St. Albert the Great, eventually earning his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the University of Paris. His teaching and preaching would send him all over Italy, France, and Germany. He died in 1274, on his way to the Council of Lyons.
St. Thomas Aquinas is one of the most influential thinkers in the great history of philosophy and theology. Through his writings, including the Summa Theologiae, and through his intercession in prayer, St. Thomas still guides us ever closer to the truths revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. St. Thomas Aquinas was canonized in 1323. He is the patron of Catholic universities, colleges, and schools. His feast day is January 28.
